Search "electric car hire Malta" and you'll likely land on pages for GoTo, Malta's electric car-sharing scheme. GoTo shut down in 2022. We're publishing this page because the confusion it left behind deserves a straight answer — not because we can point you to a thriving EV rental market. We can't, not yet, and we'd rather say so than pad this page with claims we can't source.

What actually happened to GoTo

GoTo ran roughly 450 shared EVs and mopeds island-wide on a per-minute pricing model, until it ceased Malta operations on 30 September 2022, after more than a million rides. Its parent company continued operating in other markets, but no island-wide replacement has emerged in Malta as of 2026. GoTo's old marketing pages still surface in search results, which is very likely why "EV rental Malta" keeps returning confusing, outdated results.

What we can't confirm about EV rentals today

None of the roughly 30 operators in our own roster publish an electric or hybrid vehicle offering we could verify, and we don't currently track powertrain type as a field on any operator profile. That's a gap in what's documented, not proof that no operator anywhere in Malta rents an EV. If this matters to your trip, ask a company directly whether an EV is available for your dates, and ask about charging arrangements before you pay — we don't have sourced information on Malta's public charging network to relay here, so we won't guess at it.

The one thing that isn't the obstacle: range

If you do find an EV to rent, distance shouldn't be the reason to hesitate. Malta's main island runs roughly 27km end to end — even a full-island day trip sits comfortably inside the range of any electric car on the market today. Whatever is holding back EV rental in Malta, it isn't the size of the island.
