How commissions work

We may earn a commission if you book through links on this page.

RentIsle is free to use and carries no advertising. It is funded by affiliate commissions: when you follow one of our partner links, book a car with that partner, and the rental goes ahead, the partner pays us a share of what it earned from the booking.

The commission is paid by the partner out of its own revenue. Your price is the partner’s price — the same figure the partner would show you if you had typed its address yourself. Following our link does not add anything to what you pay, and it does not change the terms of your rental. If you book directly with a rental company through a plain link to its own website, we earn nothing.

A partner’s commission may be calculated on the whole of its booking revenue, including optional extras the partner sells at checkout. That does not change our editorial position on those extras, set out below.

Who our partners are

Our affiliate partners are:

• DiscoverCars (discovercars.com) — a car-hire booking platform that lists international chains and Maltese local companies side by side.
• Localrent (localrent.com) — a booking platform focused on local rental companies, often with pay-on-arrival and low- or no-deposit terms.
• Travelpayouts (travelpayouts.com) — an affiliate network through which some booking programmes run.

Links marked “operator website” go straight to a rental company’s own site and are not affiliate links. This list changes when our partnerships change; the date at the top of this page tells you when it was last checked.

What commissions never touch

Commissions we may earn never influence how a company is scored, how companies are ordered in any list, what a verdict says, or what a guide recommends. Every company on this site is ranked by the same editorial score — traveler reviews, deposit and payment friction, fee and fuel transparency, service and logistics — whether or not it can be booked through a partner, and whether or not that partner pays us. Companies we cannot score are listed as Unrated, after every ranked company, never mixed in.

The one thing commissions do decide is routing: when a company can be booked through more than one partner, which partner a “book via” button links to. That choice may take into account what each partner pays. It never changes where the company sits in a list. The full method is on how we rank, and it is updated whenever the routing rule changes.

Insurance: we do not sell or recommend it

We do not sell, arrange, advise on or recommend insurance or excess-cover products — not rental companies’ excess-reduction options, not booking platforms’ “full coverage” add-ons, and not standalone excess insurance from anyone else. We carry no affiliate links to insurance products. Where a guide explains what an excess is and what the ways of covering it are, that is neutral information to help you read a rental agreement, not a recommendation to buy anything.

How to tell an affiliate link

Three ways, any one of which is enough:

1. The address. Every affiliate link on this site points at our own domain at an address beginning /go/, followed by the partner’s name — for example /go/discovercars. Hover over a link and your browser shows the address in its status bar. The search button on our home and comparison pages opens the partner in a new tab through the same /go/ address. A link that goes straight to a rental company’s own domain is not an affiliate link.
2. The label. On a company profile, each link under “Book via” names the partner it opens — DiscoverCars, Localrent — or says “Operator website” when it is a plain link to the company itself.
3. The sentence. Every page that carries an affiliate link shows the words “We may earn a commission if you book through links on this page.” before the first such link, and the same sentence sits in the footer of every page.

What a click sends

When you follow an affiliate link, our server checks that the destination is a known partner domain, adds a tracking label that says which page and placement the link sat on and which car class it concerned, records one cookieless click event that contains no identifier, and redirects you. We set no cookies; the partner sets its own on its own domain after you arrive. The exact data flow is described in our privacy policy.
