This guide explains how the hold actually works, what "no deposit" claims typically mean, and — honestly — what our own operator records do and don't confirm.

Why deposits worry travellers most

Threads like "New car rental scam – Malta" on TripAdvisor return again and again to the same pattern: a large hold placed on a credit card at pickup, a wait for it to be released after the car is returned, and occasional disputes over damage or fuel that delay the release further. That is forum-documented consensus, not a claim about any one company.

How a deposit hold works

A rental deposit is a hold, not a charge — the company places an authorisation on a credit card and releases it after inspecting the returned car. It is standard practice for the hold to sit on a credit card in the driver's own name; most international brands require this and will not accept a debit card for it.

Excess, SCDW, and the fines block, in plain terms

Three separate figures get confused with each other:

• Excess is the maximum you're liable for if the car is damaged, even with basic cover included. Typically €500–€2,000, with most standard cars in the €750–€1,500 range.
• SCDW (Super Collision Damage Waiver) is an add-on that lowers the excess, usually to roughly €100–€275. FDW (Full Damage Waiver) removes it.
• A fines deposit — often an extra €200–€300 — is sometimes blocked separately, to cover traffic fines that arrive after you've flown home.

"No deposit" and "low deposit" are two different promises. Read which one a company is actually making before you rely on it.

What our own data says about no-deposit operators

Right now, Roscar Malta is the only operator in our roster with an explicit €0 deposit figure recorded in its published terms. Every other operator we track currently shows "Not published" for deposit amount. That means we haven't found a verifiable public figure for it, not that the company necessarily requires a large one — if you're considering a specific company, ask it directly and get the figure in writing.
