No-deposit car hire in Malta: what the fine print actually says

Deposit blocks are the most-discussed frustration in Malta car-hire forums — cash or card holds reported in the €600–1,000+ range, and disputes over getting the money back afterward. This guide explains how the hold actually works, what "no deposit" claims typically mean, and — honestly — what our own operator records do and don't confirm.
Why deposits worry travellers most
Threads like "New car rental scam – Malta" on TripAdvisor return again and again to the same pattern: a large hold placed on a credit card at pickup, a wait for it to be released after the car is returned, and occasional disputes over damage or fuel that delay the release further. That is forum-documented consensus, not a claim about any one company.
How a deposit hold works
A rental deposit is a hold, not a charge — the company places an authorisation on your card and releases it after inspecting the returned car. Companies generally want that card in the driver's own name, according to the European Consumer Centre Ireland. Whether a debit card will do depends on the company: some companies' terms accept only a credit card for the deposit, others accept a debit card, and our debit card guide quotes what each one says.
Excess, SCDW, and the fines block, in plain terms
Three separate figures get confused with each other:
- Excess is the maximum you're liable for if the car is damaged, even with basic cover included. Typically €500–€2,000, with most standard cars in the €750–€1,500 range.
- SCDW (Super Collision Damage Waiver) is an add-on that lowers the excess, usually to roughly €100–€275. FDW (Full Damage Waiver) removes it.
- A fines deposit — often an extra €200–€300 — is sometimes blocked separately, to cover traffic fines that arrive after you've flown home.
We don't sell or specifically recommend any insurance product here. Whether to add SCDW, buy separate excess cover, or rely on a travel card's own protection is a decision for you and your bank or insurer — this section only explains what the terms mean.
"No deposit" and "low deposit" are two different promises. Read which one a company is actually making before you rely on it.
What our own data says about no-deposit operators
We publish only what a published source states — an operator's own terms, or its supplier listing on a booking partner such as DiscoverCars — and show "Not published" where we can't verify a figure, never a guess. Of the 31 operators we track, 16 publish a deposit figure in their own terms, and two of them publish €0: Roscar Malta, and Dolmen Car Rental on Gozo. The other 15 show "Not published" for deposit amount. That means we haven't found a verifiable public figure for it, not that the company necessarily requires a large one — if you're considering a specific company, ask it directly and get the figure in writing.

Three ways renters usually handle the excess: accept it (the worst case above); buy the desk’s reduction (SCDW/FDW), which lowers the excess to roughly €100–275 market-wide; or rely on separate cover they already hold. Read the terms yourself, before you book
Whatever deposit figure a company publishes, three habits protect you regardless of the number:
- Photograph the car — every panel, the fuel gauge, the odometer — before you drive off.
- Get the fuel policy in writing, not just verbally at the desk.
- Know your excess figure before you sign, and ask directly whether SCDW or a separate fines deposit applies on top.
