Long-term and monthly car hire in Malta

Of the 31 companies we track, 12 say something about long-term or monthly hire on their own pages. Exactly one publishes a term that changes because the hire is long. The rest of what you would want to know — the monthly rate, whether the deposit is bigger, who services the car in month three, whether the mileage stays unlimited — is not published by anyone, which is the single most useful thing this page can tell you.

This guide sets out what each company actually says, as we read it on 22 September 2026, and what to get in writing before you commit to a month. It carries no prices. We publish price figures only when we have checked them against live results ourselves, and we have not.

"Long-term" has no agreed meaning here

No company in our roster defines it. Nobody publishes a day count at which a rental becomes long-term, a minimum period, or a maximum. Mayjo on Gozo comes closest by describing the range — "weeks, months, or even a full year" — and OK Mobility's site navigation separates a "Flexible Leasing" product of 2 to 9 months from a "Leasing" one of 24 to 72 months, which tells you where leasing starts for that company and nothing about where renting stops.

So treat "long-term" as a sales word, not a product with rules. What matters is the rental agreement you sign, and whether its terms say anything different from the ones a one-week visitor signs.

No statement found — on the pages in our records we found nothing about long-term or monthly hire in Malta for Aquarius Rent A Car, Budget Malta, Car Rentals Ltd, CarQ Malta, Carwiz Malta, Dolmen Car Rental, Drifter, First Car Rental Malta, Goldcar Malta, Gozo Garage, Green Motion Malta, Hertz Malta, JS Car Hire, MSG Malta Rent a Car, OK Mobility Malta, Princess Car Hire, Roscar Malta, Sicily by Car Malta and WheeGo Malta.

That is not a refusal. Several of those sites carry a "Leasing" or "Long-Term Car Rental" item in their menus without a page of terms behind it for Malta, and a navigation label is not a published term — so we have not counted it as one. Ask, and get the answer in writing.

The one term we found that changes because the hire is long

Mayjo's terms and conditions contain a single sentence that no other company in our roster matches: "For rentals longer than 25 days, a mileage limit may apply." The same page adds, in the same breath, "Frequent trips to Malta with the vehicle by ferry, are prohibited."

Read that against what the same companies promise on a short hire. Unlimited mileage is close to universal in Malta's published terms: Gozo Garage says "All our rates include unlimited mileage", JS Car Hire's rates "are inclusive of comprehensive insurance, subject to applicable excess, unlimited mileage, and 24x7 mechanical breakdown service", and the rate inclusions published by First Car Rental, Malta Car Hire .Mt and MSG Malta all list unlimited mileage too.

Mayjo's clause is the proof that "unlimited" can be a short-hire promise. It is the only one we found in writing — which does not mean the others have no cap, only that nobody else publishes one either way. Ask for the mileage allowance for your actual period, in writing, before you pay.

What is in the rate, and who services the car

Three companies publish what their rate includes, and each of them names maintenance:

• First Car Rental Malta: "Comprehensive insurance cover including public liability and third party insurance subject to an excess, unlimited mileage, 24hr road assistance and breakdown service, road licensing fees, routine vehicle maintenance and V.A.T."
• MSG Malta Rent a Car: "Unlimited mileage, 24-hour road assistance and breakdown service, road licensing fees, routine vehicle maintenance, and VAT."
• Malta Car Hire .Mt: "Tax and Vat, Comprehensive insurance, Third party insurance, unlimited mileage, 24hr road assistance and breakdown service*, road licensing fees, vehicle maintenance."

On a week that clause is invisible. On three months it is the whole question, because a service interval will fall inside the hire. Percius, which runs leasing as a separate business, is the only company we found that describes what happens: "Cars rented on a long-term basis, are regularly washed and serviced." MSG makes a general claim on its home page — "All our cars are regularly serviced and maintained to ensure their safety and reliability on the road" — without tying it to a rental in progress.

Nobody publishes the mechanics: who books the service, whether you lose the car for a day, whether a courtesy car appears, what happens if the service is due in a week you had planned to be on Gozo. Those are the questions to put in an email.

Extending a rental is not the same as booking a long one

If you are already in Malta and want to keep the car, the terms that apply are the extension terms, not a monthly rate. Avis is the only company in our roster that spells them out: "If you want to extend the rental please contact us as soon as possible. At the latest, this should be before the end date and time on your rental agreement. Extra days will be charged at ‘pay at location’ prices."

Its terms also set out what an unapproved overrun costs. Avis says it will charge "an extra day's rental plus a late return administration fee for each day or part of a day until the vehicle is returned", that "the late return administration fee is Euro15.00 per day in addition to the daily rental charge at 'pay at location' prices", and that on the third day past the agreed return it will "pre-authorise payment for an additional 5 days' rental charge on your debit card or, 10 days if you are using a credit card". If you think your dates may move, agree the extension before the agreement's end date rather than after it.

Deposits, excess and insurance do not visibly change

We looked for a published term that makes the deposit, the excess or the cover different on a long hire, and found none. Every deposit and excess figure in our records is written as a per-rental figure with no duration attached — our debit-card guide sets out which card each company will take for the block, and our no-deposit guide covers the companies that publish a zero deposit.

Two things follow. First, a card block sized for one rental does not obviously get smaller because the rental is long, so plan for it to sit on your account for the whole period. Second, if a company tells you the deposit, excess or cover works differently over a month, that is a term you will not find on its website — get it in the agreement.

Leasing is a different product

Percius advertises "Long term car leasing for virtually any car you desire" and says it has "over 20 years' experience in leasing cars". Europcar puts "long-term leases" at the far end of its own range. Hertz Malta, First Car Rental and Mayjo each carry a "Leasing" item in their own site menus, and OK Mobility's navigation offers leasing from 2 to 9 months and from 24 to 72.

A lease is a contract with its own insurance, maintenance and termination terms, usually aimed at residents and businesses rather than visitors. If you are in Malta for months rather than weeks it may well be the cheaper shape — but it is not the rental agreement this site compares, and none of the companies above publishes lease terms we could quote.

What we will not tell you

We do not publish a monthly price, a "from" figure, or a comparison of the two. This site shows a price only when we have checked it against live partner results ourselves and can date it, and we have not done that for monthly hire. Everything else would be a number copied from somewhere else and presented as ours.

For what it is worth, the market's own disclosure is just as thin. Vai Drive publishes a full rate table by car class and rental length, and every cell in its "Monthly" row reads "ask for price". addCar is the only company in our roster that answers the monthly-cost question on its own page — with a budget figure it immediately qualifies by "car group or model, season, mileage" — and you should read it there rather than here.

Get these in writing before a month-long booking

• The total for the exact period, with every unavoidable charge in it, and what the daily rate becomes if you return early.
• The mileage allowance for that period. "Unlimited" on the website may be a short-hire promise — Mayjo's terms show it can change past 25 days.
• Who services the car during the hire, how much notice you get, and whether you keep a car while it is in.
• The deposit amount, the card it goes on, and how long the block stands. Our debit-card guide covers which companies accept what.
• The extension terms and the late-return charges, before you need them.
• Whether the car may cross to Gozo, and how often. Our Gozo guide covers the crossing; Mayjo's terms show a ferry restriction is a real clause.
• Who to call at 2am in week nine. The 24-hour assistance in the rate inclusions above is the term to point at.
